The Manager of the Renal Centre at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital Bauchi Hajiya Hammamatu Haruna has urged government to provide more dialysis machines and recruit addinal personnel to meet rising demand of the treatment.
She made the call while featuring on Ina Muka Dosa, a Radio Nigeria Globe FM Bauchi audience participatory programme, highlighting increasing cases of chronic kidney disease.
Hammamatu Haruna who explained that high blood pressure and diabetes remain leading causes of kidney disease, stressed that sufficient and sustained government intervention would ameliorate the challenges.
She listed symptoms including foamy urine, fatigue amd and frequent urination warning that patients present late due to lack of awareness and limited access to screening services.
According to her, management focuses on controlling blood pressure, regulating blood sugar, adopting healthy diets, and using medications, while dialysis becomes necessary in severe cases where kidney function significantly declines.
She appealed for sustained public education and regular health checks, especially among high risk individuals, emphasizing that timely intervention can slow progression and improve quality of life for affected patients.
