Bauchi State Government has approved the use of the Safe Delivery App, developed and introduced by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in collaboration with the Maternity Foundation, to strengthen maternal healthcare.

The App was launched at the Aliko Dangote College of Health Sciences during this year’s commemoration of the International Day of the Midwife, themed “One Million More Midwives”, as announced by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM).

The event, organised by the State Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in collaboration with UNFPA, attracted journalists, students, and staff of the college.

The Safe Delivery App, which contains 17 modules, was initially launched in February 2026 and is being implemented in Gombe and Ogun States under the Ten Million Safer Birth Initiative Project, aimed at saving lives in communities across Nigeria.

UNFPA Programme Officer in Bauchi State, Ms Deborah Tabara, said the life-saving digital learning App is intuitive and user-friendly and, once downloaded, requires no internet connection to operate.

Ms Tabara added that the App is available in five versions, in line with World Health Organisation guidelines, and can be used in major indigenous Nigerian languages.

She explained that health workers can download and share it with colleagues regardless of how remote their facilities may be.

The State Commissioner for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Sani Mohammed Dambam, who noted the contributions of midwives and nurses in savings lives, appreciated their unweaving dedication and sacrifice in the state’s healthcare service delivery.

He stated that the Day being celebrated every 5 May, highlights the significant contributions of midwives to communities across the globe.

Also speaking, a Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Malam Dauda Yakubu, urged midwifery and nursing students to make effective use of the newly introduced App and remain dedicated to their studies.
