NUJ Warns Journalists Against Unverified Reports Alleging Imam’s Removal

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi State Council, has cautioned journalists against publishing unverified reports alleging that an Imam was removed for campaigning for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Isah Garba Gadau, and Secretary, Isiyaka Ismail Wunti, the Council expressed concern over the circulation of the allegation on social media and other platforms without adequate verification.

The statement says the Council’s preliminary inquiries found no evidence that the individual involved in the centre of the controversy had been appointed or served as an Imam in any mosque within Bauchi metropolis or elsewhere in the state.

It notes that the reports failed to specifically identify the mosque, the authorities responsible for the alleged removal or the reasons for the purported action and stressed the need for independent confirmation before publication.

The statement warns that unverified reports involving religion and partisan politics could fuel misunderstanding, heighten tensions and threaten public peace, particularly as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general election.

It urges journalists to distinguish verified facts from allegations and political claims, seek responses from relevant parties and uphold accuracy, fairness, objectivity and accountability in their reporting.

The NUJ Bauchi State Council therefore, reaffirmed commitment to press freedom and responsible journalism, warning that disregard for professional and ethical standards would not be treated lightly.
