Bauchi State Government has directed for the immediate suspension of enforcement of the livestock right-of-way policy, following concerns over its implementation methods and timing across the state.
Governor Bala Mohammed gave the directive during a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House, explaining that the policy, backed by an Executive Order and State Assembly law, was introduced to provide designated livestock routes and reduce conflicts between farmers and livestock breeders.
The Governor expressed concern over the use of chemicals to clear livestock routes, warning that such chemicals could endanger animals and crops, particularly as farmers approach the harvest season after investing heavily in agricultural activities.
Bala Mohammed stressed that enforcement should have commenced earlier, adding that government policies must be implemented with empathy, adequate consultation and proper sensitisation to protect livelihoods and promote peaceful coexistence among stakeholders.
Speaking earlier, the Secretary to the State Government, Aminu Hammayo, said the meeting was convened at the instance of the Governor to address concerns surrounding the enforcement of the Executive Order on livestock right-of-way.
He explained that a committee comprising relevant ministries, departments, agencies and stakeholders had been constituted to sensitise the public and ensure effective implementation of the policy across the state before enforcement.
The meeting has in attendance the Emir of Bununu, Alhaji Jibrin Danlami Hassan, traditional rulers, leaders of farmers and livestock associations, commodity groups, representatives of security agencies and members of the State Executive Council.
