Pregnant and lactating mothers in Bauchi metropolis say the daily intake of Multiple Micronutrient Supplement (MMS) is improving their wellbeing, citing better appetite, increased strength and improved blood levels.
MMS, a daily prenatal tablet that contains iron and folic acid plus a collective mixture of vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin A, B-complex, C, D and E, which provides the necessary requirements for a healthy pregnancy.
A mother of four, Zubaida Usman from Bayan Nitel, says she finds the supplement easier to take daily, noting that it causes less discomfort while supporting her health during pregnancy.
Another mother, Ummulkhairi Aliyu Bununu of Unguwar Kandahar, said that although she initially experienced difficulty, guidance from health workers helped her adjust, leading to improved appetite and overall comfort.
Similarly, Ummukursum Abubakar, Aishatu Abdullahi Muhammad from Doya and Zainab Abdullahi of Fada report increased strength and better sleep since starting the supplement, adding that it has positively affected their daily routines.
The Nutrition Specialist at UNICEF’s Bauchi Field Office, Mrs Philomena Irene, says MMS was designed to prevent micronutrient deficiencies, reduce maternal anaemia and improve fetal growth and birth outcomes.
Mrs Irene explained that scaling up the supplement aims to enhance maternal energy and nutrient status, support healthier pregnancies and reduce low birthweight as well as contribute to better early childhood wellbeing.
She added that “134,280 bottles of MMS were provided to Bauchi State through UNICEF as part of the scale-up with support from the Kirk Foundation and training of the Health and Community Workers by the Gates Foundation.”
Meanwhile, the Executive Chairman of the Bauchi State Primary Health Care Board, Dr Rilwanu Mohammed, confirms receiving positive feedback from beneficiaries and assured that the state government in collaboration with UNICEF and partners, will sustain the programme.
