The Federal Ministry of Health has presented the National Self-Care guideline to Bauchi State government for possible domestication and adoption.

The guideline when domesticated will address barriers of accessing all sexual and reproductive health services and improve the wellbeing of girls and women.

Presenting the document at the State Primary Health Development Agency, the Assistant Director, Family Planing Unit of the Federal Ministry of Health, Mr. Alex Ugochukwu said the Self-care guideline has also provided the roadmap for implementation.

Mr. Ugochukwu explained that the policy would help Nigerians to personally monitor their health at home before consulting healthcare professionals.

According to the Assistant Director, Self-Care is the ability of people to promote health, prevent diseases, and to cope with illness or disability without the support of healthcare provider.

While commenting on Child birth spacing Mr. Ugochukwu noted that there was an increment in the use of modern family planning methods by women in the country both at national and states levels.

Responding, the Executive Chairman of the State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Rilwanu Mohammed who expressed fear over Self-Care policy said the state would study and domesticate the document so as to prevent it from abuse.

Also speaking, the Acting Permanent Secretary in state Ministry of Health Dr. Dayyabu Mohammed Hassan expressed optimism that the Self-Care guideline would provide people the opportunity to wisely take care of their health.

The document was presented in collaboration with John Snow Incorporated, World Health Organisation, Association for Reproductive Health and Family Health, Pathfinder International, White Ribbon Alliance, PATH, and JSI.
