A four day Continuous Professional Development Teacher Refresher training on Early Grade Reading EGR aimed at improving quality and efficiency of teachers has commenced in Bauchi.
The training for 160 School Support Officers SSOs umder NEI Plus is to equip them with the technical know-how to cascade the knowledge to about 3600 teachers across the ten focus local government areas.
Declaring the training open, the Executive Chairman State Universal Basic Education Board SUBEB Dr Surunbai Sheikh Dahiru said the move would help government in addressing problem of incompetent teachers.
Dr Surunbai represented by the Director Quality Assurance of the board Mr Sulisma Lemuel, who expressed dismay over the poor quality of teachers especially in rural areas, stressed the need for the continuous training of teachers towards salvaging the system.
“Please we need these teachers not to terminate or remove them from their work places, no, we want to see how we can get them and see if they are trainable, maybe we can engage colleges of education around us to train them not for certificate but to perform” he stated.
He called on quality assurance officers at the ten focus local government areas to identify teachers in dire need of training so as to ensure quality teaching and learning.
Earlier, the State Team Leader Northern Education Initiative NEI Plus Malam Mustapha Ahmad said training is coming after the extension of the project by seven months due to the long break caused by COVID 19 pandemic .
Mustapha Ahmad who was represented by the System Strengthening Officer Bauchi Dr Abubakar Sadiq Ilelah, said emphasis is made on Remediation so as to bring to speed pupils and teachers who were left behind on the Let’s Read and Mu Karanta lessons.
“Because considering the fact thatbthe project is winding up in May this year 2021 doesn’t mean rhat the work will stop. It warns s expected that all of you should have that sense of ownership and sustainability” he said.
He charged the SSOs to ensure they step down the training to others and also forward the reports to various units and departments which they serve under to ensure corrections and implementation are made in time.
In a goodwill message, the Teacher Education Specialist NEI Plus Abuja office Madam Jummai Sarki commended the School Support Officers SSOs, Reading Coordinators RCs and Master Trainers MTs for their effort towards implementing the project to the later.
Speaking on behalf of the participants, the Education Secretary Toro Local Education Authority Ibrahim Shehu Musa appreciated NEI Plus and SUBEB for the opportunity and promised to step down the training for the benefit of the children.
The focus local government areas under the USAID supported project include Bauchi, Darazo, Itas Gadau, Ningi, Alkaleri, Toro, Gamawa, Misau among others.
