News Governor Bala Mohammad and Ak-47 Saga

Governor Bala Mohammad and Ak-47 Saga

-

One of the obvious aspects that is projecting bad image of Nigerian democracy is the failure of leaders to take uncommon decision in promoting peace and unity of the country even if such action is against the interest of their subjects.

What is oftenly being described as inconsequential is the way and manner the embattled case of herdsmen is taking bad dimension to the extent that some Governors are acting against the provision of the Constitution which gives the mandate for Nigerians irrespective of ethnoreligious inclinations to live freely in every part of the country without any form of intimidation.

It against this backdrop, Governor Bala Mohammad of Bauchi State took the advantage of a Press Week organized by members of the state correspondents Chapel to make observations on the implications of the quit notice and subsequent humiliation of Fulani herdsmen in some part of the country. This according to the Governor if not carefully manage would attract retaliation from those who may feel the only way to revenge is taking similar action at the detriment of anyone from the states where Northerners are being maltreated.

A day after the Governors comment, Northerners were innocently humiliated by hoodlums in Oyo and Lagos states with properties worth millions of naira destroyed in addition to similar unsuccessful plans in other parts of the country. This justified the fact that his comment should not be seing as a mere rhetoric but a contribution to discourage the ugly trends.

Despite the sensational headlines published by most of the national dailies about the Governor Bala’s personal opinion on how herders were forced to carry AK-47, his massage was very loud and clear that what will make Nigeria to maintain it status as one indivisible country is the ability of government at all levels to desist from formulating and enforcing policies that would further escalate the present security challenges across the country.

” If you don’t accommodate other tribes, we are also accommodating your tribes in Bauchi and other places for more than 150 years even before the birth of Nigeria” the Governor was responding to reaction of Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state on the way he handles the herders situation in his state.

Every objective mind would not sense an element of controversy in all the Governor’s statements including where he reported to have said nobody owns the forests because the Constitution has recognized the freedom of movement and living from one place to another.

” Because the Fulani man is practicing the tradition of trans-human, pastoralism he has been exposed by all types of intimidations and now the cattle wrestlers who carry Guns to kill him and takeaway his cows. He has no option but carrying AK-47 because the society and Government are not protecting him” the Governor added.

As a true nationalist whose profile at state and federal levels is heavier than those baselessly accusing his objectivity about issues of national security, Bala Mohammad should not be categorized among leaders who are politicizing security for selfish interest.

This is because, as a former minister and Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, common sense should convince the right thinking members of the society that Governor Bala was just adding his voice on the need to take a collective decision in addressing issues capable for disrupting the peace and unity of the country.
