Stakeholders Advocate Full Implementation of VAPP Act.

Stakeholders in Bauchi State, have advocated full implementation of the recently signed Violence Against Persons Prohibition, VAPP, Act in the state.

They made the call at a Workshop on the Implementation of the State VAPP act, held at the state capital.

The meeting which drew participants from Ministries of Justice, Health, Finance, Budget and Planning, Women Affairs and Child Development, Sharia Commission, the Media, Civil Society Organisations, CSOs among others was convened by the UN Women, a United Nations entity for Gender Equality and Women Empowerment.

The Country Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS of UN Women Ms. Comfort Lamptey said the meeting was aimed at developing a Costed Action Plan for full implementation of the recently signed VAPP Act.

Ms. Lamptey who was represented by UN Women Project Coordinator for Strengthening State Capacities and Women Participation in Covid Response and Broader Peace Bulding Initiative, Bukola Ademola said women were confronted with a lot of problems particularly in the face of Covid-19 pandemic where rape cases and other abuses were being reported.

She called for a holistic support of all stakeholders towards ending the menace.

In her submission, the State Chief Judge, Justice Rabi Talatu Umar said the law when fully implemented would be given due consideration and qualitative interpretation by the Judiciary.

Justice Rabi Umar who was represented by Barrister Emmanuel Danjuma Subilim, expressed readiness to give all necessary support to the VAPP law with a view to bringing an end to Gender-Based Violence, BGV.

On her part, the State First Lady Aisha Bala Mohammed said she was passionate about the fight against Gender-Based Violence.

Aisha Bala Mohammed represented by Nancit Dala explained that her decision to support the creation and inauguration of a committee saddled with the responsibility of advocacy and monitoring reported cases of GBV was born out of her commitment towards ending the problem.

Also speaking the District Head of Bauchi Alhaji Nuru Adamu Jumba who expressed concern over the recent development of rape cases in the state pledged traditional institutions’ readiness to participate fully in the implementation of the signed VAPP Act.
